The Pacific Theater

The Pacific Theater of Operations was the major campaign in the South Pacific during World War 11.  The Pacific Theater was set up after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, ultimately leading to the United States entry into World War 11.  The campaign was set up in four different theaters of operations with the strategic goal to take over the South Pacific Islands.  This would in turn cut the distance between the Allies and mainland Japan in half.  The major operations of the Pacific Theater were overseen by Admiral Chester Nimitz and Douglas MacArthur. (Hall, 1991)  The battles in the South Pacific ultimately led to the surrender of the Japanese Empire and marked the end of World War 11.

This battle portrait is a famous representation of World War 11. The soldiers are raising the United States Flag on top of Mount Suribachi after defeating Japanese forces in Iwo Jima. This was a very bloody battle for the Unites States, but very important to the campaign and getting closer to the Japanese Mainland. The United States overtook Iwo Jima on March 26, 1945.
